The position is based in the newly established „Computer Science Education Group“ (CSEG) within the Chair of „Didactics of Computer Science“, headed by Mag. Dr.techn. Bernhard Standl, as part of the EDEN research group at the Faculty of Computer Science at the University of Vienna. The research focuses on the empirical investigation of teaching and learning processes in computer science education related to computational concepts and ways of thinking, particularly computational thinking, algorithms and modeling, programming, data and data-driven systems, as well as AI literacy in school and university contexts. A central component is the Computer Science Teaching and Learning Lab. There, computer science education teaching-learning designs are developed, tested, empirically investigated and refined in collaboration with students, teachers and schools. The postdoctoral position is designed as a research-intensive career-building role and offers the opportunity to further develop an independent research profile in computer science education, contribute to the design of externally funded projects and actively help build the research group.

Your tasks

  • You further develop your independent research profile in the field of computer science education and enhance your international academic visibility.
  • You play a central role in the establishment, operational coordination and strategic development of the CSEG.
  • You design, coordinate and lead empirical studies on computer science teaching and learning processes in the Computer Science Teaching and Learning Lab in schools and in university settings related to teacher education.
  • You conduct research on computational thinking, instructional design for teaching and learning fundamental concepts in computer science, algorithms and modeling, programming, data and data-driven systems or AI literacy.
  • You support pre-doctoral candidates as well as bachelor’s and master’s students with research designs, data collection, analysis and publication projects.
  • You publish in internationally recognized journals and play a leading role in the development, submission and coordination of competitive third-party funded projects.
  • You teach in accordance with the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement and perform collaborative and administrative tasks within the research group, particularly with schools, the Center for Teacher Education, universities of education and other partners.
  • You participate in evaluation measures and in quality assurance.

Your profile

  • Completed doctoral/PhD degree in computer science education, computer science or a related field with a clear focus on computer science or computer science teaching and learning processes.
  • A demonstrated interest in computer science education, fundamental concepts of computer science, computational thinking, AI literacy and teacher education.
  • Experience with empirical research methods.
  • Ability to conduct independent academic work and develop a visible research profile.
  • Publication experience or strong potential for international academic publications.
  • Excellent written and spoken English skills, as well as German language skills sufficient for work in school and teacher education contexts or a willingness to develop these skills promptly.
  • Ability to work in a team, strong communication skills, initiative and enthusiasm for building a new research group.

Desirable Qualifications Include:

  • Research experience in one or more of the aforementioned areas.
  • Experience in school-related research or teacher education.
  • Experience with design-based research, intervention studies, videography, interaction analysis, qualitative content analysis, statistical data analysis or comparable methodological approaches.
  • Experience in securing external funding or in collaborating on externally funded projects.
  • Teaching experience in a university setting, as well as experience supervising or co-supervising student theses.
  • Interest in knowledge transfer activities, science communication and collaboration with schools and other stakeholders in the education system.
  • Project management skills and organizational experience.
